Charging your electric car at home is crucial to make sure you have enough fuel to go wherever you need it. There are three types of EV charging stations. Each has its own installation process.
Install Level 1 EV charger
Level 1 EV chargers come with your EV and don't require any special installation - just plug the Level 1 charger into a standard 120-volt power outlet and you're ready to use. This is the biggest attraction of Level 1 charging systems: you don't have to deal with any additional costs associated with installation, and you can set up the entire charging system without a professional.
Install Level 2 EV charger
Level 2 electric car chargers use 240 volts of electricity. This has the benefit of providing a faster charging time, but it requires a special installation program, as standard wall sockets only provide 120 volts. Appliances such as electric dryers or ovens also use 240 volts and the installation process is very similar.
Level 2 EV Charger: Details
Level 2 installation requires running 240 volts from the circuit breaker panel to your charging position. A "bipolar" circuit breaker needs to be connected to two 120 volt busbars to double the circuit voltage to 240 volts using a 4 stranded cable. From a wiring point of view, this involves connecting one ground wire to the ground bus, one normal wire to the ground bus, and two hot wires to the bipolar circuit breaker. You may have to replace your circuit breaker box completely with a compatible interface, or you may be able to simply install a bipolar circuit breaker on your existing panel. It is necessary to make sure that you turn off all power into your circuit breaker box to turn off all circuit breakers and then turn off your main circuit breaker.
Once you have connected the correct circuit breaker to your home wiring, you can connect the newly installed 4 strands of cable to the charging point. This four-strand cable needs to be properly insulated and secured to prevent damage to your electrical system, especially if it is installed outdoors at any point. The final step is to install your charging unit, where you will charge your vehicle and connect it to a 240-volt cable. The charging device is a safe place to charge, and electricity will only flow when it senses that your charger is connected to the car's charging port.
Given the technical nature and risks associated with the DIY installation of Level 2 EV chargers, it is always wise to hire a professional electrician to install the charging station. Local building codes often require professional permits and inspections, and faulty electrical installation can cause material damage to your home and electrical systems. Electrical work is also a health hazard and it is always safer to have an experienced professional handle electrical work.
